Anglesey Area

Search

The area of Anglesey is an island off the north west coast of Wales. Most of the population there speak the traditional Welsh language, so the area retains a very traditional sense of history and culture. The history of this island goes back to prehistoric times, and there are many monuments and standing stones which attribute to the back story of the area.

There are plenty of great places to stay and lots of interesting things to do.

The coastal area of Anglesey was designated and confirmed as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1967, and since then has been under constant conservation work. There are fantastic sandy beaches to enjoy, and the coastal landscape is truly breathtaking. There are many opportunities for outdoor activities, and most of these are water-sports.

Anglesey tourist area also has the village with the longest place name in Britain: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. The name, when translated into English, means 'The church of St. Mary in a hollow of white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and near St. Tysilio's church by the red cave'. The name was actually coined in the nineteenth century to attract tourists to the Island. It is abbreviated to Llanfairpwll or Llanfair P.G. by the locals.

The Island has a wide range of things to do that will suit all tastes, from a Victorian gaol to a sea zoo; from the quiet world of exotic butterflies to a thrilling boat trip out to sea.

Anglesey tourist area is ideal for those who like their holidays active. Its varied coastline makes Anglesey tourist area an ideal location for watersports throughout the year with great opportunities, and facilities, for scuba diving, surfing, canoeing and windsurfing at many of its resorts.
