Welcome to Strathpeffer Pump Room
This delightful small but buzzing museum harks back to when Strathpeffer was in its heyday after huge expansion during the nineteenth century due to the presence of sulphur springs. The first wooden pump room was built in 1819 and the village expanded rapidly as wealthy Victorians flocked to try the proclaimed health benefits of the spring water.
As the spa resort developed the railway also opened up the village further, the Strathpeffer branch of the Dingwall and Skye Railway opened in 1885 and Strathpeffer rivalled spa resorts in England. Large hotels were built to accommodate the growing numbers of visitors and these can still be seen in the village today.
The main Pump Room was demolished in the 1950s but the smaller Upper Pump Room remained and has been developed into an interactive museum of interet to adults and children alike. You can of course still sample the healing waters of Strathpeffer Spa!
