Vancouver Island is a large island in British Columbia, Canada, one of several North American locations named after George Vancouver, the British Royal Navy officer who explored the Pacific Northwest coast of North America. Much of this region has been protected as parkland, with pockets of astonishing old-growth fir and cedar forests and rare, naturally occurring groves of Garry oak. Vancouver Island is bisected, north to south, by the Beaufort Mountain Range, which is home to one of Canada's biggest all-natural ski bases.
