The lovely city of Bayonne sits on the banks of two rivers The Nive and the Adour. It is ideally situated 10 mins from an airport and the Atlantic beaches and runs into neighbouring Anglet. It's also 30 mins from N Spain. Along the river Nive are lovely half timbered Basque town houses, home to lots of shops, cafes and bars. The tall town houses have shutters and exposed timbers painted in the typical red and green Basque colours and are very photogenic. Stroll through the Botanic Gardens with more than 1000 species, one of the reasons for Bayonne holding the prestigious 4 flowers category of the Ville et Village Ffleurie competition.Nearby you can see remnants of the ramparts of the town from three different eras: Roman ramparts, ramparts from the time of Francois I (16th C) and ramparts designed by the famous Vauban (17th C).
In Grand Bayonne see the gothic cathedral, Cathedrale Ste Marie and some of the streets near the cathedral such as Rue d’Espagne, which leads to the Port d’Espagne, which are hung with bunting in this lively part of town.
Over the river Nive you will find the Musée Basque, which is the biggest museum of Basque life. It houses 2000 items and works of art commemorating Basque life. (see separate listing). Nearby is the Musee Bonnat with its large collection of paintings by Leon Bonnat as well as paintings by Rubens, le Greco, Goya and Degas. Also in this quarterof Bayonne is the Eglise Saint Esprit, a once important stage on the Pilgrimage to Saint Jacques de Compostella.
