Welcome to Abbaye de la Lucerne
The abbey of La Lucerne, built between 1164 and 1178, is being reborn. Since 1959 it has been rising from its ruins, and the bells ring joyfully again over the valley.
During the hundred years war the word "d'Outremer" (meaning from over-seas) was added to its name to signify the attachement to the English Kings, descendants of the Dukes of Normandy, who where in favour of the building of the abbey.
Each year the great bell softly tolls throughout the night of the 24th and 25th of November, in mourning for the young prince William - son of Henry Ist King of England and grandson of William the Conqueror - and his tutor Othoërne - father of the founder of La Lucerne, Hasculfe de Subligny - who both perished in the sinking of the Blanche Nef.
The abbey is famous for its roman church, great west door and lavatorium - unique in Normandy - also its manor house, tithe barn and ancieny dovecote.
