House of Secrets, Smuggling Exhibition
Gunsgreen House has stood guard over Eyemouth harbour for over 250 years. It was built by Edinburgh architect, John Adam. It was run by business owner John Nisbet, who also carried on illegal smuggling. You can look out over the harbour where his ships landed secret cargoes, visit the dark cellars where the merchandise was hidden and see how he conducted has trade from the comfort of his mansion.
During the 18th century there were massive taxes on tea and that made smuggling extremely profitable.
Gunsgreen House still hides its secret tea chute.
